They started with a simple mission: Keep it small. Keep it focused. Do it as long as it works. And it’s worked for 20 years. Interrobang Design Collaborative was founded in 1997 when Mark Sylvester left a design director position at JDK and joined his wife, Lisa, who had a part-time freelance design business. The couple didn’t have any first-hand experience running a business and were unsure whether it was something they could pull off. Twenty years later, they’re celebrating their success and still amazed that they get to start every day in their Richmond, VT barn studio.
While many couples couldn’t imagine working together, Mark and Lisa wouldn’t have it any other way. They got to know each other and design simultaneously. The couple met in 1983, their freshman year at the Philadelphia College of Art [now uArts], in a graphic design elective class. They went through the graphic design program at PCA and graduated in 1987. A year after graduating they were married. In 1990 both Mark and Lisa were accepted into the MFA Design program at Cranbrook Academy of Art where they obtained their master’s degrees.
The design team has had the privilege of working with businesses like Switchback Brewing Company from the get-go, watching them evolve and grow as a company, as they create and expand their brand identity. They’ve helped non-profits like ANEW Place and Steps to End Domestic Violence develop new names and brands that represent them well and help connect them with their audiences. They’ve helped the smallest of businesses get their footing and supported large corporations whose internal resources are overstretched get things accomplished.
This is the heart of what the studio is really about — helping businesses and organizations to succeed through design. Mark Sylvester says, “We are very thankful to our clients who value design, recognize its benefits, and have allowed us to do such great work over the years. We’re proud that two people in a barn have been able to build a successful business that has accomplished so much.”
Interrobang Design Collaborative is a strategic design studio that builds connections between people and brands. The studio, founded by Mark and Lisa Sylvester in 1997, provides brand development and design services for businesses and organizations in Vermont and beyond.
